We at Calvary know that worshiping at a new church for the first time can be daunting.

Will there be chairs or pews? An organ or a praise band? Screens or a hymnal? How will I know when to stand and when to sit? Where will you find the bathrooms? Often when you decide to visit a church for the first time, you don’t quite know what to expect over the hour or so you are with this new faith community.

To help be more hospitable to newcomers, we’re launching our Digital Bulletin with some expanded resources in it to hopefully help make your first time worshiping with us the first of many!

This will be a resource available to guests and longtime members alike, whether you are worshiping in our sanctuary with us or online via our YouTube Live-stream.

Each Sunday, you’ll be able to find the link to this fully digital bulletin in three places:

  • On the homepage of our website
  • In the comments of our Live-stream
  • Via a QR code at the back of our sanctuary.

We wanted to create a resource that would be especially helpful to newcomers who are not familiar with worshiping in more “liturgical” church settings, like ours.

The first page will always have a short welcome, some brief information about upcoming events, our staff contact information, and then a way for you as a guest to share some information with us so we can follow up and connect more after the service.

As you follow along with this digital bulletin, not only will you find all the words to the songs we sing, the scripture we read, and the prayers and liturgies we will say together, but you will also find little explanatory notes that are there to help you understand the why behind our different postures of worship here at Calvary Moravian Church.

The next page will always have some notes to help address some of those basic questions many visitors have when they decide to worship with a congregation for the first time. You’ll always see a note about how we are an open and affirming congregation at the top of this page, because it is crucial for us to make sure you know that ALL are welcome here at Calvary.

Then, there will be some information for those worshiping with us in our sanctuary. This will include where you can find the nearest bathroom as well as our children’s ministry/nursery space for families and kids who may just need a little space from time to time.

Lastly, there will be some information for those who are worshiping with us online and how you can engage with us throughout the live-stream.

After this, you’ll find the “Order of Service” part of the bulletin, which will be your road map for our time in worship together. If you are worshiping in our sanctuary, we will still have the smaller bulletin and our hymnals for those who enjoy and know how to use these worship resources, but for newer folks who are less familiar with a hymnal, all you will need to follow along and worship with us will be in this digital bulletin.

At Calvary, we typically move through three main postures of worship:

  • Singing and Praying Together
  • Giving Back Together
  • Engaging Scripture Together

We worship God with our full selves, and so this often looks like singing, praying, engaging scripture together, and giving back either in service or through the offering. As we move through these different postures of worship, there will be short little explanations written for you to see that help address why we worship in this way. For instance, when it comes time to pray our liturgy for the morning, you’ll see a brief note that says something like this:

“The liturgy in the Moravian tradition is a communal act of prayer, often with a specific theme or focus, where we go back and forth between speaking and singing. At times we will be invited to stand, and at other times we will remain seated. You are invited to join in whatever posture suits you! Additionally, any parts written in bold are for the congregation to say together. So please, join in!”

It can be daunting to join a new faith community for worship for the first time, but it doesn’t have to be. We hope that when you worship with us here at Calvary, either in person in our sanctuary or online, you are welcomed by the friendly faces that call this faith community home and are eased into our way of worshiping with this new digital bulletin.
